Dallas ISD, Dallas County Extension and the State Fair of Texas teamed up to host Dallas ISD Farm Day at the Fair, a learning excursion that raised awareness and stressed importance of agriculture to urban youth.

Students in grades second through fourth from Margaret B. Henderson Elementary, Celestino Mauricio Soto Jr. Elementary, Thomas L. Marsalis Elementary and John Q. Adams Elementary participated in the day at the fair.

The Farm Day at the Fair included an overview of the USDA’s Farm to School Initiative by Bill Ludwig, Regional Administrator-USDA FNS Southwest Region, an Ask the Farmer Q&A hosted by Brandon Sides of Sides Pea Farm in Canton, Texas, and a learning excursion through the livestock area with Daryl Real, vice president of the State Fair of Texas Agriculture Department.

Last week, Southwest Airlines presented a check of $10,000 to students and staff at Maple Lawn Elementary in recognition of community service. The school is located in the Love Field Airport area and serves approximately 600 students in grades pre-K through fifth grade.

The donation was made possible thanks to proceeds from the 15th annual SWA Classic Car Show that was held last month. The car show is a fundraiser organized by Southwest Airlines-Technology.

This fall, Dallas ISD will offer interpretation services at various elementary schools in their native languages to bridge the gap of communication at parent/teacher conferences.

The district often translates for families through the Translation Services department but those students who speak the languages of Swahili, Nepali, Burmese, Korean and French provide the students a unique opportunity to serve the community. The Emmet J. Conrad High School students are part of a co-ed Boy Scout Troop along with those at L.L. Hotchkiss Elementary. Both will have a role in translating between the teachers and students.

Dallas ISD serves students and families from 104 different countries and 60 languages.
