Local middle school students participated in the Region XII seventh- and eighth-grade Pentathlon, April 25.

The morning started with individual competitions as students tested their knowledge in literature, math, science and social studies. When it came down to the fine arts category, students intently listened as music flowed through the P.A. system, challenging them to recall music history facts. After all the individual categories were complete and scores tallied, students placing first through third earned medals and helped boost their school’s overall Pentathlon scores.

The top overall schools were:

Seventh grade:

• 1st – Harry Stone Montessori Academy

• 2nd – William B. Travis Academy

• 3rd – Dallas Environmental Science Academy

Eighth grade:

• 1st – Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School

• 2nd – Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy

• 3rd – Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy
