Americans behaving un-American

SUSAN K. SMITH | 7/8/2018, 12:52 a.m.
As the story evolves about children being separated from their parents on the southern border of this country, we hear ...

But it is not the first time. American white supremacy is fueled by fear which feeds into a base hatred of non-white people. White supremacists are fighting for their lives, angry and terrified that the so-called “browning of America” seems imminent. They are complaining now, as they have in the past that “these people” are stealing American jobs – which is a blatant lie. Immigrants do the work that many to most Americans think is beneath them. They work for wages that are embarrassingly low, and for the most part do not complain. But the white supremacist mind cannot think logically because fear and hatred have poisoned their capacity to do so.

What is going on now is a repeat of what insecure white supremacists have done throughout history. They do not care if babies are crying; they do not care if parents are in mortal spiritual agony as they wonder where their children are. They blame the parents for bringing their children to this country or for sending them – forgetting that many present-day Americans were sent or brought to this country illegally themselves, seeking a better life. They were willing to take the risk, or to encourage to take the risk, because conditions in their native countries were too oppressive.

The cries of those who are fighting for ending the separation of these families will go largely unheard and ignored. The children who have been sent elsewhere already may never be found. It is the American way, and it always has been.
