City Council highlights: Immunizations, transportation and new bait cars

Because no Dallas City Council candidate in District 5 or District 14 received a majority vote in the election on May 11, a runoff election will be held on June 15. The candidates in District 5 are Rick Callahan and Jesse Diaz. Bobby Abtahi and Philip T. Kingston will run for office in District 14.

City renames convention center

In a Dallas City Council meeting held on April 24, the Council approved the re-naming of the Dallas Convention Center in honor of retired U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. In 1993, she became the first female senator from Texas. The Council lauded her numerous accomplishments while in office such as her work with Dallas Area Rapid Transit to develop the nation’s largest light rail system, her efforts in the acquisition of $225 million for the Trinity Corridor Project, and her consistent advocacy of the authority and autonomy of local government.

Building Dallas County

In a Dallas City Council meeting held on April 10, the Council authorized a Special Economic Development Grant Agreement with CitySquare to help fund the WorkPaths program. The program provides low-income residents of the Southern Sector with job training courses and post-graduation professional support. The funding will not exceed $75,000.

Mayor appoints canvassing committee, city claims eminent domain

The Dallas Examiner In a Dallas City Council meeting held on March 27, Mayor Mike Rawlins appointed Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Medrano, Councilmember Linda Koop, Councilmember Angela Hunt and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins, who will serve as an alternate, to an Ad Hoc City Council Canvassing Committee. The committee will review the results of the May 11 general and special elections, and submit a report to the council on May 22.
