Due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus and in an abundance of caution in an effort to prevent an excessive spread of the disease, many public events have been cancelled or postponed. The organizations below have announced immediate closures. Other events may be cancelled with little notice. Anyone with intentions of attending an event should contact the event facilitator directly ahead of start time.

Additionally, the city of Dallas opened a temporary, overnight shelter at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center to add bed capacity as overnight shelters have lost beds due to social distancing precautions. The shelter will open March 15 and continue overnight sheltering operations, 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., through the morning of March 21.


Cancelled events:


  • City of Dallas facilities: Public access is closed to all city of Dallas libraries, neighborhood cultural centers and recreation centers through Friday. All city programs are suspended until further notice. The city is contacting groups with reservations to cancel and reschedule those bookings.

Dallas Public Library staff will answer phones and respond to customer emails. To find contact information, visit

Dallas Park and Recreation has suspended all department-organized programs, including any athletic fields reservations and organized play. On Tuesday, it closed all playgrounds, golf courses and tennis centers until further notice. However, open air use of parks and trails will remain open.   • Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and the West Dallas Multipurpose Center has also close public access to its facilities through Friday. This includes all reservations and events scheduled on campus. The closure does not impact the Foremost Family Health Clinic. All in person social service appointments are being rescheduled or will be transitioned to phone calls.

  • The Black Academy of Arts and Letters has postponed Arts & Letters Conversation with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and the performance of Set It Off. Purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled event.


  • Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has also cancelled its national tour, which included performances in Dallas.


  • The Perot Museum of Nature and Science will close to the public through March 20.
  • The Dallas Opera cancelled all performances, education and community engagement programs and donor events through April 28.


  • The AT&T Performing Arts Center has canceled all programs and rehearsals scheduled at the Center’s venues in the Winspear Opera House, Wyly Theatre and Strauss Square through March 19. Additional cancellations may follow.


  • Billy Bob’s Texas will be canceled or postponed until further notice.


  • The Irving Hispanic Chamber has cancelled its March performances: Power Hour, Networking Mixer, SER Mujer Conference, BIG Heroes Appreciation Day

  • Parkland Health and Hospital System has suspended its community events, health fairs, advisory board meeting, CTC meeting and public speaking engagements until further notice.


  • The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has cancelled all volunteer trainings – statewide, both within and outside of TDCJ facilities – until further notice. During this time, volunteer status will not be suspended due to lack of training or retraining.


  • Dallas County has cancelled all jury trials for Dallas County Criminal Courts, Civil Courts and Justice of the Peace Courts through May 8. Dallas County citizens summoned to appear at the Frank Crowley Criminal Courthouse, the George Allen Civil Courthouse or a J.P. Court prior to May 8, should not report nor call to reschedule their service. Additionally, Dallas County is asking attorneys representing individuals accused of crimes to check with the Court Managers Office on the process for continued representation of their clients during this time.

Jail cases, jail pleas and bond hearings will proceed as normal. Bond cases and in-person disposition of bond cases will resume on May 11. Appearances for bond cases will be waived until May 8. Cases should be reset by calling or sending an email to the appropriate Court Coordinator. Some courts are accessible by Skype to provide a virtual option for any dispositive settings on both jail and bond cases. Check with each court to determine if this is an option.

  • South Dallas and West Dallas Community Courts have been closed to the public. Defendants may contact 214-930-6960 for guidance or to be directed to an alternative location. Defendants can be redirected to one of the following courts:

  • CoC Youth Committee has postponed the Youth Count until October 2020. The new dates will be Oct. 16 and Oct. 17 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. As a consequence, of the next Youth Homelessness Address will be in February 2021. The plan is to resume our regular schedule of Count in the Spring and Address in the Fall in 2021.
