In a Monday morning ceremony, the newly elected Dallas mayor and City Council members were officially sworn in at the AT&T Performing Arts Center Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House. The term for Mayor Eric Johnson will run through 2023. The term for the Dallas City Council members will run through 2021.

Until recently, Johnson represented the city of Dallas in the Texas House of Representatives for the past decade.

As the 60th elected mayor of Dallas, he outlined his vision for the city during the inauguration ceremony, focusing on ethics reform, education and workforce development, public safety, and using data to foster innovation.

“Dallas voters did more than cast a vote on June 8, they cast a vision. They made a clear choice about who they want to be and where they want to go. Our mission in the coming years will be to fulfill this vision for our city. To create a brighter future and to build an even better Dallas – a Dallas that works for every person, in every neighborhood,” he said.

Johnson also vowed to work with Dallas City Council, the city manager and Dallas chief of police to address building a more unified and safer city.

“I look forward to working with Mayor Johnson and the new council to realize their vision for the city of Dallas,” said City Manager T.C. Broadnax. “My hope is their fresh ideas and optimism permeate City Hall and that we can challenge each other to improve the lives of Dallas residents.”

In addition to the mayor, six new council members join eight council members who were reelected to another term. The new council met at City Hall in Council Chambers for their first meeting, and elected Councilman Adam Medrano as mayor pro tem and Councilman B. Adam McGough as deputy mayor pro tem.
