It seems that America’s privileged White citizens are running scared.
The people – not just Black people – but a huge swath of America’s people – are fed up with America’s racism, spurred and nurtured by white supremacy which has given White people the false belief that they can do whatever they want forever.
The brutal and cruel murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer ignited a spark of resentment and frustration among Black people, but it also opened the eyes of many White people and people of other racial and ethnic groups. The callous killing of a Black man who was begging for his life and telling the police officers that he could not breathe was too much for too many people.
Like a wildfire, the anger and resentment has spread across the country, tainted by violence and looting, but the resolve of those who are protesting has been and continues to be significant. The people are not backing down, risking their lives as we are still in the clutches of the corona virus. The peaceful protests are being crashed by outside forces, reports indicate, but that has not stopped masses of Americans from across this country from coming out and protesting America’s descent into anarchy.
The people in power have never learned, it seems, that unless and until all of us are free and safe, none of us are free and safe. Yes, the government has weapons of mass destruction, and the president, who has done nothing but stoke the embers of racism since he has been in office, believes that “strength” means you get out the big guns and shoot everybody down, as noted by the Wall Street Journal.
But the fight that this president is fighting is ultimately not winnable by him, in spite of his access to guns. He cannot kill the entire nation. His country is failing, right in front of his eyes, and he can do nothing to stop it. His leadership has failed. The only thing he has managed to do is cater to a group of people who seem to adhere to racist beliefs. He calls them “very fine people,” but these very fine people are not enough in number to save this nation.
His economy has failed. His followers brought guns to state houses as they complained about stay in place orders, but his gun-toting followers cannot shoot hatred and ignorance. If the economy was in danger before, it is in even more danger now, because more businesses have been adversely affected because of being burned down as this nation vents its frustration and anger at the way police have been able to denigrate and disrespect people for literally generations.
America is falling because of this president’s racism, his lack of leadership, and his inability to show empathy with the people he is leading or respect for the constitution he swore to uphold and protect. He has pulled away the facades which have attempted to hide America’s racist core, and it is now laid out in front of us all, its ugliness pulsating like a glob of poisonous mucous. America’s lungs are filled with droplets of hatred which it has never been able to expel. As this president isolates this country more and more, it is being taken away from the relationships with other countries and organizations with which it has had relationships for decades and on which it has depended for help even as it provided help for them. The president and his wealthy White friends are taking the country down, protecting themselves and their interests, even as this nation suffocates from its racist legacy.
Floyd said he could not breathe, and he died. The police killed him. America is has not realized that the pressure of this toxic racism is on its neck, and by the time it does realize it, it will be too late, like it was for Mr. Floyd. America’s pulse is weak. It’s only a matter of time before she will cry out that she cannot breathe. An empire will have fallen at the hands of a self-serving, weak, narcissistic leader who in the end was no leader at all.
Vladimir Putin once said, observing America, that “empires fall,” according to ABC News. As Putin basks in the fall of America, those who have helped this nation’s demise should shudder as they realize that they brought this country to this place, a place from which it is not going to be able to rebound.
