Special to The Dallas Examiner

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson announced Monday that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $2,185,595 to Head Start of Greater Dallas Inc. for Head Start Projects.

“This grant funding for Head Start projects will allow Head Start of Greater Dallas, Inc. to continue providing vital early childhood education and quality childcare assistance to North Texas families,” Johnson stated. “Head Start provides children with the essential skills needed to help them be successful in life.”

Head Start is a non-profit program that provides free childcare, extended social services, preventative health and prenatal education services to the parents of infants and toddlers.

“Head Start of Greater Dallas Inc. is grateful for continued Discretionary funding, especially during these difficult times, for the children and families we serve.  This award will ensure that HSGD continues to provide quality services to our community,” said Kathryn McCartney, Head Start CEO.

COVID-19 testing sites

The COVID-19 walk-up testing site provided by the Dallas County and Parkland Health and Hospital System relocated to Inspired Vision Compassion Center at 2019 N. Masters Drive moved to The Salvation Army’s Pleasant Grove Corps Community Center at 8341 Elam Road July 11. The new walk-up testing site was scheduled to begin offering services July 13, but had to postpone the opening because individuals broke into the storage location for the site and stole all of the equipment and supplies used to conduct testing. It opened the next day to begin offering services Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until test capacity is reached.

CitySquare and Kroger, in partnership with the city, are continuing drive-thru and walk-up COVID-19 testing at CitySquare Opportunity Center at 1610 South Malcolm X Blvd. Today, testing will be available from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Testing times for the CitySquare location are announced weekly at https://www.citysquare.org/covid-19-testing. Register at https://www.krogerhealth.com/covidtesting.
