The recent display of a homemade Trump 2024 T-shirt by Texas Tech kicker Reese Burkhardt highlights a troubling double standard in our state-funded institutions. As a state, we’ve banned diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives to remove politics from our schools. Yet here we are, allowing a partisan message on the playing field-a message that embodies deeply political views that are exclusionary by nature. It sends a clear signal that some perspectives are allowed, while others are not.
Right now, Texas institutions have implemented policies that defund schools discussing critical race theory, ban educational programs that promote gender inclusivity, and penalize educators for fostering open dialogue. At the same time, displays of MAGA ideology- rooted in calls for mass deportation, cutting resources for inclusive education, and restricting what it labels as radical gender ideology-are given a pass. When institutions favor one political stance, they create an environment that alienates students, educators and staff who rely on those banned resources for support and representation.
Texas Tech has yet to address this incident publicly, but as the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, we urge them-and all state-funded institutions-to uphold their responsibility to provide a balanced, politically neutral environment. If we are removing DEl programs in the name of keeping politics out of education, then we can allow political messages to slip in selectively.
This is about consistency and integrity in our commitment to education and fairness.
As Texans, we’ve fought too long and too hard for equality, inclusion and justice to turn back now. Let’s stand together for a Texas where every voice counts, every student is supported, and every educator can teach without fear. We owe it to our state’s future to ensure our institutions reflect the values of inclusion, respect, and genuine opportunity for all.
In Solidarity,
Ron Reynolds
Chairman
Texas Legislative Black Caucus
